P. Ramlee's Birthday

P. Ramlee’s actual name is Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Putih. He was born on March 22, 1929 and passed away on May 29, 1973. P. Ramlee was a Malaysian film actor, director, producer, singer, and composer. He was a prominent icon of Malay entertainment and his fame reached Brunei, Sumatra in Indonesia, Hong Kong and Japan.

P. Ramlee’s father, Teuku Nyak Putih was from Lhokseumawe in Aceh, Indonesia while his mother, Che Mah Hussein was from Penang. He received his education from Sekolah Melayu Kampung Jawa, Francis Light School and Penang Free School. He was registered as ‘Ramlee’ in school. P. Ramlee was a reluctant student but talented in music His studies at Penang Free School was interrupted by the Japanese occupation during WW2. He enrolled into the Japanese navy school and learned the basics of music and to sing. He was able to read musical notations by the time the war ended.

His first screen appearance was in 1948 and his career took off from there. He won several awards throughout his career.

P. Ramlee was married three times and had many children but only two were his own from his first marriage. P. Ramlee passed away on May 29, 1973 at the age of 44 due to heart failure. His remains were buried at the Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetery, Kuala Lumpur.
