Awal Muharram
Awal Muharram, also called Maal Hijrah is a day that symbolises two important events in the Islamic calendar. It falls on the first day of Muharram, which is also the first month in the Islamic calendar. Therefore, Awal Muharram is the Islamic New Year’s Day. This day also marks the historic journey of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Yathrib, later renamed by the Prophet to Medina, in the year 622. The Muslims celebrate Awal Muharram by attending prayer sessions in the mosque and spend time with the family. On this holy day, the emphasis is on remembrance, reflection and gratitude.
