Loy Krathong

Loy Krathong festival takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. The festival is celebrated over a few days, spanning from a day before and a day after the actual full moon day. It is believed that Loy Krathong originated from the celebration dedicated to the water spirits in ancient Thai. Today, Thais celebrate this festival to make a wish and to ask the divine power for help. The main element in this festival is the floating of little baskets made of banana leaves that are decorated with flowers. A lighted candle is placed inside the basket . The Thais believe that the floating baskets will take their wishes to the water spirits who will then fulfil their wishes.
