Global Day of Parents

The United Nations proclaimed June 1 as the Global Day of Parents to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship. Some countries adopt the same date for their Parents’ Day while some countries have it on another day. In the US, Parents’ Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of July. It was established in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed a Congressional Resolution into law for recognising, uplifting and support the role of parents in rearing of children. In South Korea, Parents’ Day fall on May 8 and is celebrated both by the public and the government. In the Philippines, Mothers’ Day was traditionally celebrated on the first Monday of December. In 1921, Circular No. 33 designated the first Monday of every December as Mothers’ Day was issued and during the Philippines Commonwealth Government, President Quezon issued Proclamation No. 213, s. 1937 declaring the day designated as Mothers’ Day as Parents’ Day. In Malaysia, Mothers’ Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May while Fathers’ Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. There is no specific day for Parents’ Day celebration in Malaysia but restaurants and shopping malls promote the Parents’ Day sales during the duration between Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day.
